How Many Oysters Should You Plan Per Person?

This is the most common question we get—and for good reason. Oysters are easy to overthink, but planning them doesn’t have to be complicated.

The right number depends on how oysters fit into your event, how long service runs, and what else is being served. Here’s a simple breakdown we use when helping clients plan.

As a Light Appetizer

2–3 oysters per person

This works well when oysters are one of several passed or stationary appetizers. Guests get a taste, but oysters aren’t the main focus.

Best for:

  • Short cocktail hours
  • Events with heavy hors d’oeuvres
  • Large guest counts where oysters are a highlight, not the centerpiece

As a Cocktail Hour Feature

4–6 oysters per person

This is the sweet spot for most weddings and private events. Oysters feel abundant, guests can come back for seconds, and the raw bar becomes a natural gathering point.

Best for:

  • Wedding cocktail hours
  • Welcome parties
  • Corporate receptions

This is what most of our clients choose.

As a Main Attraction

6–10 oysters per person

If oysters are the star of the show—or if your crowd really loves them—this range ensures no one feels limited.

Best for:

  • Oyster-forward parties
  • Seafood-focused events
  • Smaller guest counts with enthusiastic oyster fans

A Few Important Things to Consider

Not everyone eats oysters.
There will always be a handful of guests who pass. That’s normal and built into planning.

Timing matters.
A one-hour cocktail hour needs fewer oysters than a three-hour open-house style event.

Season and variety help.
Offering a mix of oysters keeps guests interested and slows overconsumption of any single variety.

More food = fewer oysters needed.
If there’s shrimp, ceviche, or other raw bar items, oysters stretch further.

Our Rule of Thumb

If you’re unsure, plan for 4–6 oysters per person. It’s generous without being excessive and works for most events.

When we handle an event, we help fine-tune quantities based on:

  • Guest count
  • Event length
  • Overall menu
  • Flow of service

That way nothing feels rushed—and nothing goes to waste.

Still Not Sure?

If you’re planning a wedding, private event, or pop-up and want help dialing in the details, we’re always happy to talk it through.

Good oysters deserve good planning—but not stress.

See you around the raw bar. 🦪
